In a letter to NJEA President Joyce Powell, Christie refused an invitation to participate in NJEA’s gubernatorial candidate endorsement screening process this weekend. Powell expressed her disappointment in Christie’s unwillingness to participate in a constructive dialogue about educational issues in New Jersey.

In a statement, Powell said: “It is unfortunate that Mr. Christie is unwilling to take the time to have an honest discussion about educational issues with the organization that represents the overwhelming majority of the state’s educators. It is also unfortunate that the Republican standard-bearer has chosen to break his party’s long-standing tradition of candid discussion and direct communication with NJEA.”

NJEA represents more than 200,000 teachers, education support professionals, higher education staff, and retired educators in New Jersey.

Elect pro-public education candidates NJEA’s 125-member political action committee voted to endorse Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) for president and Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) in his bid for re-election to the U.S. Senate. In addition, NJEA has endorsed ten candidates for Congressional seats. They include two Republicans and eight Democrats. NJEA PAC made no endorsement in three districts: Congressional District 1, Congressional District 3, and Congressional District 7.

Oct. 14, 2008, is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 4 election. Remind your members to register to vote or update their registration before Oct. 14. County associations select from among these nominees and nominate one individual for the state award. The county’s nomination form is due at NJEA headquarters by Friday, Oct. 17.

Nominate a human rights advocate Nomination forms and documentation for the NJEA Human Rights Award are due Oct. 1, 2008. Awards will be presented at the NJEA Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Dinner in January.

Contributed to the motivation of individuals or groups seeking self-determination
Shown creativity, determination, and perseverance in achieving human and civil rights goals

Delegate assembly notice
The Delegate Assembly (DA), NJEA’s elected policy-making body, will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Marriot Conference Hotel at Lafayette Yard, 1 West Lafayette St., Trenton. Nondelegates wishing to address the DA may do so at 11 a.m. by registering the morning of the DA meeting.

The ninth session of the NJEA Union School will be conducted on July 13-17 at the Hyatt New Brunswick. The mission of the school is to introduce union advocates to the NJEA structure and to the functions of the various divisions within the organization and to increase the pool of qualified future candidates for full-time and part-time professional and associate staff positions with NJEA.

Participants who attend Union School will be selected from the pool of candidates based on the criteria listed in this nomination letter and form. Completed nomination forms are due Feb. 15.

The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide has developed an online interactive training experience that meets the New Jersey legislative mandate for two hours of professional development in suicide awareness. Robert Bonazzi is retiring after 16 years as the Executive Director of NJEA. A celebration to honor him is scheduled for September 15, 2007, at the Robert B. Meyner Reception Center – PNC Arts Center in Holmdel.
